"I am thinking of starting a small business", says one. "Hmm! good for you, I am trying to get noticed at work so I can get promoted", says the other.
Whether it's just casual conversation among friends, serious topics among colleagues, or even the mind conversations you have with yourself, one thing is always constant. We just want to get better in life.
We spend hours thinking of ways to improve and grow. In fact, what might seem only dreams inside your head can be turned into your reality.
Inspired by the book "Show Your Work" by Austin Kleon, here are a few tips to become a better version of ourselves.
1. You Don't Have To Be a Genius.
Unfortunately, many of us believe that in order to do something that is new for us, we should have a pretty good knowledge of how to do it. And if you don't, it is better to not do it at all.
This isn’t true. To grow and to improve we just need to start somewhere.
You want to swim in the deep waters, and you are afraid that you will drown, well then try floating there, get the hang of it. Paddle your feet and hold on to a lifesaver. And before you know it, you will be enjoying the thrill of swimming in the deep waters.
It is good to have a beginner's mindset as there is no pressure to be the best person. This way you see a lot of potential and more opportunities to explore new things.
Remember the first baby step is the most important one.

2. Start Learning
Once you put your mind to getting better at something, the next step is to learn as much as you can. Talk to people who are experts in the field, research, google it, and you will find tons of information that you can apply to yourself to get better in what you started..
Once you start paddling in the deep waters, go back and learn the techniques that would make you a better swimmer. The breathing, the proper strokes. Can you float regardless of the depth.
Find people to teach you what you don't know. Hire an Instructor or join a class. Start learning.

3. Continue To Grow
It's important to track your progress. Start recording and documenting the steps you take. Having a collection of data will help you in making informed decisions.
Set small achievable goals to track your progress. By doing so, you will know you far you have come and how far you have to keep going. Make up your own progress chart. Looking at it every now and then will keep you motivated and give you the confidence to keep going
Think about certain milestones that you want to hit by learning to swim. Maybe you can start by mastering basic strokes. Track the hours of practice you put in. Slowly as you see progress, you will be motivated to even try more complicated swimming techniques.
4. No Journey Is Smooth
I saved this for the last because when we read or think of the negative things related to our goal of getting better at something, we would rather forget about it entirely and continue watching that show on Netflix. This is normal human behaviour.
But think of it like this,
"What comes easy , may not last, and what lasts may not come easy."
After a long day of swimming practice, your whole body would be sore. you wouldn’t be able to move your arms. Almost at the brink of giving up, STOP and think back. You did the entire lap in the pool. You were able to keep yourself afloat without drowning. You did much better than day one when you could only float in the deep waters and not swim at all.
It is the same with anything and everything. Give yourself time and keep taking small steps. Of course, there will be ups and downs. But trust yourself, and look back at all the progress you made. Tell yourself why you are doing this. You want to become better. Life is short, if you don't do it now, then when would you do it.
And like I said, Getting better is easier than it sounds.
